These project management solutions and/or online team collaboration tools are licensed using an approved Open-Source License. Unliked Hosted Solutions open source solutions are free to use but the responsility for hosting rests on the entity using it.

For entities with small budgets and/or significant in-house technical talent Open-Source Project Management/Online Team Collaboration tools can be the way to go. Open Source alternatives make great options for many organizations and especially colleges and universities where there are many students with great technical skills available to install and manage these solutions.

ProjectPier

ProjectPier is a free, open-source app for managing tasks, projects and teams through a web interface. ProjectPier will help your organization communicate and collaborate. It includes an import function to assist in migrating all your existing data away from BaseCamp. Its function is similar to commercial groupware/project management products, but allows self-hosting.

Streber

Free webbased project managements. With Streber, freelancers and small teams can setup projects and keep track of tasks, issues, bugs, efforts etc. Project-User-Rights can be adjusted e.g. to provide clients a limited view of the current project state

Web Collab

Individual users are assigned rights and permissions. Users can also be put into groups with controlled rights and permissions. Projects and tasks progress and approaching deadlines are graphically highlighted. Changes are personally highlighted for other users to see. Changes and new items can be emailed to affected users.

RailsCollab

RailsCollab is a port of the project management tool ActiveCollab (which is written in PHP) to the Ruby on Rails framework, obviously written in Ruby. ActiveCollab in turn is loosely based on BaseCamp, which also happens to be written in Ruby - what a co-incidence!

dotProject

The Open Source Project Management tool. dotProject is a volunteer supported Project Management application.
